Don’t Be Left In The Dark About Dry Eye Disease!

The Music City Dry Eye Symposium (MCDES) will focus on one largely overlooked aspect of eye care: the role of the biofilm in dry eye disease (DED).  The symposium will include didactic presentations with panel discussion and a half day interactive wet lab session.

The meeting will bring together subject matter experts among ophthalmologists and optometrists to share with fellow eye doctors about the recently discovered cause of dry eye.  The symposium will discuss how elimination of biofilm can profoundly impact the severity and chronicity of blepharitis and subsequent dry eye.

Educational Objectives

  • Describe how bacteria build biofilm on the eyelid margin and how it produces toxins that result in chronic inflammation
  • Discuss how the biofilm affects different structures within the eyelid throughout a patient’s life, resulting in differing presentations depending on age and the affected structures
  • Review how biofilm remediation procedures can greatly reduce and/or eliminate the inflammatory response and bring healing to eyelids, including the tear glands
  • Explain how once the disease is under control, and symptoms relieved, how regular 6-month lid hygiene can maintain healthy eyelids and tears

Target Audience

Ophthalmologists and optometrists, fellows, student, office staff and healthcare professionals interested in the role of the biofilm in DED.
